Bag It! (in style)

Our next Sewing Day back in the lovely surroundings of Helena House Hall at Helena College Darlington Campus. First Tuesday of the month. Please check in at the Admin. Building first before coming to the Hall on the Lower Ground Level entrance from the rear is best.

TUES Sept. 5
10AM – 2PM
Helena College Darlington Campus, Helena House Hall
145 Ryecroft Road, Darlington, WA 6070

We need lots of these alternative bags to help our community transition to the plastic-free shopping habit of bringing their own bags. Come and join in some creative fun (with a social purpose). There are plenty of non-sewing jobs, but these things are always needed:

  • scissors
  • sewing machine
  • overlocker
  • material (to donate)
  • cotton

These community-created Boomerang Bags are placed at participating local shops and are available free to Borrow & Bring Back. They encourage a habit of re-use amongst local shoppers and are part of a transitional strategy to encourage the use of natural alternatives AND Ban Single-use Plastic Bags in our Shire (and the world)!

This is a joint campaign by the Wasteless Pantry and Mundaring in Transition.
Hope we see you soon, so sign up for Workshop Reminders.

Ban the Bag Petition

BREAKING NEWS!!
We’re taking the WA Local Govt. advice to heart and have just started circulating a PETITION TO BAN SINGLE USE PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS in The Shire of Mundaring. The issue will be brought to a Council meeting in mid-August so please sign to show our Councillors that there is widespread support for this within the Shire. Find them currently at Kinfolk Cafe & Leaf & Bean Cafe opp. Woollies. If you want a petition for your business or can help collecting signatures in your area, just message us here at transition@mt.org.au

Giving Back – Service & Action

Boomerang Bag making with just a few days notice, a rainy day and yet … we had a hugely productive day. Especially thanks to the younger generation “doin’ time with Nan”. That’s Community Service time, an idea we’re keen to see replicated all over the Shire. Will these Facebook pics do as proof for Helena College, or do we need to sign your logs. Bonus …. there were yummy cookies as well! What are you waiting for? Organise a sewing group soon. We can help you. Contact transition@mt.org.au

Banning the Bag – Start Talking About It

Outcome of the Shire Council Meeting motion from Tues 13 Jun (to Ban Single Use Plastic Bags). The motion, as it was presented by Cr. Trish Cook at last night’s meeting was not passed, but is also NOT OVER! A new motion was formulated and the serious conversation has now begun. So start talking about it with your family, your friends, in your groups & especially important: with local businesses in the Shire.
Here is the amended motion that was made … see more

Ban the Bag in the Shire

Here’s your chance to register your concerns about single use plastic bags. Councillor Trish Cook will be presenting a motion (see below) to the next Council Meeting on TUES 13 JUNE. If you come at 6.30pm you can make a short 3min deputation (or listen to ours) She needs our support!! Send a nice, short email to the President (and your local representative too if you wish) saying you support the motion. You can find all your elected members email addresses HERE .

Don’t forget to let the President and your elected member know you support this motion. Cr. Cook needs help with this!

No waste, no worries … make cider

Thanks to our wonderful MiT volunteer apple pickers, a large proportion of the 700kg we sourced for our Community Apple Cider Making Day were windfalls. Saved from the waste pile, but perfectly fine for cider.
A whole bunch of Hills locals gathered at Jodie & Mark Hutton’s characterful home on the rural outskirts of Mundaring to be part of the hectic, hands-on buzz of transforming a huge trailer load of fruit into wonderful cider juice. Peter Lewis-Affleck did a fabulous job of explaining the history & the processes of cider making, and coordinated all the energetic activity. An impromtu (and incredibly generous) donation of organic pears by Rob of POP – Parkerville Organic Produce was wildly popular, adding to the great community spirit of the day. Still plenty of time for sharing stories, making new contacts, swapping food ideas, drinking good coffee and best of all: having hosts who just kept the woodfired pizzas coming for hours! Legends.

Our Fruit Squad bring an Olive Harvest in

A whole bunch of people from our Fruit Squad rocked up to Karin’s beautiful olive orchard in Stoneville to help pick 500kgs of olives! It definitely wasn’t all hard work though. The food breaks were pretty good .. there’ll be a queue if we ever get invited back here again
Haven’t heard about our Fruit Squad mob? Check it out here https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/fruit-squad-alerts-tickets-31627838717

Do we really need ANOTHER fast food outlet?

Many of us at MiT are not big fans of the multi-national fast food concept, especially when our town already seems to have a plethora of them and another about to appear in Sawyers! So we put together a petition to see who else felt that way. Then, when people said “Don’t bother, the Shire won’t take that into consideration” we decided to write a formal group submission of objection to represent all the people who needed their opinions voiced. Today we submitted it at the Shire of Mundaring just before the deadline. Building the community we want takes time & commitment, but we’re up for it. Thanks for your support.

Bag makers at work

Not everybody was deterred by the heavy rains on Thursday. We still had a great group  cutting out, sewing, ironing bags and stamping logos. The collection of Boomerang Bags will soon be appearing in local stores as a “borrow & bring back” alternative to single-use plastic shopping bags. Look for them at Woolworths, Hills Fresh and The Wasteless Pantry. Stay tuned for more bag making opportunities soon. Or if you just can’t wait, call in to the Wasteless Pantry to get some pocket logos – or even some cut out kits – to take home and get crafting.
