Cider Making Day in Mundaring

Cider Making Day was a blast.

Despite a pretty off-putting weather forecast, chilly morning temperatures etc., our intrepid cidermakers arrived in the early morning mists and rolled up their sleeves for apple action! It helped enormously that Mark & Jodie (our hosts) had a warm, welcoming fire going in the pizza oven. We all gathered around with hot drinks and listened to Peter Lewis-Affleck’s talk. Most of us were quite unaware of what an interesting history cider has. It was once used as currency – part of a worker’s wages no less! No wonder they could labour so hard & long! Today’s carbonated, commercial version is a pale imitation of the original cider. So we are looking forward to some interesting variety coming out of this cider harvest in a month or two, when hopefully we can get together to compare vintages. We’ve had some really positive feedback for Peter’s workshop and LOTS of request for another. Next harvest season maybe …

Visit Mike & Sally’s Garden in Sawyers

Lots of good ideas here. Sally & Mike are both artists at heart: a potter and stonemason (he built the fab pizza oven at Glen Forrest Community Garden). This is Mike’s take on Permaculture author Linda Woodrow’s chicken dome tractor. The chooks do the pre-cultivation & fertilisation, then he plants vegies on the spot after the dome & chooks rotate on to the next quadrant. Works a charm! Also, their first edible garden enclosed by impressive rendered strawbale walls.

Natural Face Cream Workshops

Learn how to make quality natural skin creams. Our dear friend Vera Ross is an experienced Aromatherapist and has offered to guide some hands-on, natural skin cream making workshops.
Cost will be strictly to cover materials used, around $10 – $15 depending on the size jar you bring and oils you choose. The venue is Vera’s kitchen in Parkerville, with numbers limited to about 10. PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE FOR NEXT WORKSHOP.

100 Mile Meal – a very mellow evening

The inaugural 100 Mile Meal @ Kinfolk was a brilliant, relaxed success!

Our very first free range gathering (ie. purely social, no agendas or even movies!!) It was a wonderful combination of great venue, great company, and a superb, balmy, summer evening. If there was a tiny agenda, it was to widen the conversation about what Hills people envision locally in the transition to a more sustainable, life-centred future. Big tick there!

So … lots of discussion and ideas for future local projects (and not too late to send in yours either).  Jenny invited people to join in the support team (along with having initial dialogue with Mundaring Shire about Divestment of funds from fossil fuels; Vera offered to show people how to make their own natural skincare creams (that one filled up fast!); Selene spoke about the gathering of Transition groups from around the Metro area; Amanda from Wasteless Pantry joined in and shared how much support locals have given to their bold packaging-free venture in Mundaring.

Possibly the best part of the evening: being able to come together to share ideas, good food, nice wine AND support businesses with similar values-based vision.
